A diet rich in alkali forming foods is a key factor in maintaining optimal health. Our body has a desired state of slightly alkaline, but most Americans eat a diet full of acid forming foods (red meat, sugar, dairy). Excessive acid in the body(Acidosis) can strip your body of minerals and can contribute to the loss of bone density as well as lead to a number of health problems including heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, stroke, asthma and more.
The good news is, restoring your proper pH balance is as simple as eating more fruits and vegetables. In addition, limit your intake of red meats, dairy, sugar and bread/grains.
Here is a basic list to get you started:
ALKALINE-FORMING FOODS: Most Fruits & Vegetables, Soy beans, Lima beans, Azuki beans, Brazil nuts, Sprouted seeds, Honey, Buckwheat, Barley
ACID-FORMING FOODS: Alcohol, Sugar, Dairy products, Shellfish, Grains, Sodas, Most meats (Beef, Pork, Chicken, Turkey, Lamb), Corn, Nuts, Rice, Select Fruit/Vegetables (Bananas, Sweet Potatoes, Plums, Prunes)
